Since its founding, the Wissenschaftskolleg Library has developed an innovative concept tailored to the needs of the Fellows: the Virtual Library. The aim is not the traditional assembly of its own inventory, but rather the rapid, individual provision of research literature. The ability to do this is ensured by intensive cooperative relationships with libraries and research institutes in Berlin, Germany, and beyond.

Services

The task of the Wissenschaftskolleg Library is to support Fellows in their bibliographic work and to provide access to printed and electronic stocks from libraries in Berlin and elsewhere. Books, magazines, articles, and other media are rapidly borrowed for the Fellows. Requests can be adressed to the library via the online request form.

For general literature research and targeted specialized information, the Library has access to national and international databank providers and electronic magazines. The Virtual Library provides a quick access to these sources and other relevant internet resources.
Research can be requested from the librarians or carried out by the Fellows themselves. The librarians offer individual training in optimally obtaining information in the Internet and in databanks.

Holdings

The reference library contains important reference works in all areas of knowledge. Beyond that, it also holds classics of philosophy and a selection of German, English, and French literature. The Library is accessible to Fellows at all times.

The Fellow Library holds publications by current and former Fellows. A list shows the Fellows 'publications that have arrives at the Kolleg in the course of the last six months and that have resulted  from Fellows' stays at the Wissenschaftskolleg.

The holdings of the Reference Library and the Fellow Library are listed in the Online-Catalog of the Wissenschaftskolleg.

Open Access

The Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin supports the Open Access Initiative and has signed the Berlin Declaration on open access to scientific knowledge. More information on the "principle of open access" can be found at www.open-access.net.
