Lectures at the Wissenschaftskolleg

Events at the Wissenschaftskolleg

Each academic year, the Rector of the Wissenschaftskolleg asks several Fellows to report on their research in the form of a public lecture with subsequent discussion. These Evening Colloquia are held once a month on a Wednesday at the Wissenschaftskolleg. Space limitations limit the number and disciplinary fields of guests invited from Berlin. Afterward there is an opportunity to talk with the Fellows over wine and pretzels.

Beyond that, the Wissenschaftskolleg organizes a number of series of events, often in cooperation with other institutions, that reflect our research emphases, independent of the current class of Fellows:

Once a year, an internationally especially respected researcher is invited for the bio-science Ernst Mayr Lectures. Here, the Wissenschaftskolleg cooperates with the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, in whose rooms the lecture is held. The researcher holds a seminar with young Berlin researchers the following day at the Wissenschaftskolleg.

In the framework of the Work Presentations, former Fellows of the Wissenschaftskolleg return to Berlin to speak on a topic related to the publication they worked on while residing at the Wissenschaftskolleg. The Work Presentations are usually held in cooperation with the Einstein Forum Potsdam.

To underscore the importance of the humanities and social sciences for Berlin/Brandenburg as a research site, the Blankensee Colloquia support young researchers' transdisciplinary and multi-institutional projects, subsumed under the title "Cultural and Social Change", by enabling them to set up an international colloquium with high-ranking participants. These colloquia are carried out in the responsibility of the three Berlin universities, the Wissenschaftskolleg, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, and the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin.

Last but not least, Lecture Recitals have become a tradition at the Wissenschaftskolleg since Walter Levin began them in the 1991/1992 academic year.

Along with these lectures, the Wissenschaftskolleg also organizes other events reserved exclusively for the Fellows and the critical discussion of their research projects; these include our Tuesday Colloquia, seminars, and workshops.

Those event that are open to the public are recognizable as such in the Calendar of Events. Just click on the info button in the Calendar.
