With some of its invitations, the Wissenschafiskolleg emphasizes particular topical fields that seem especially promising for research and for developing working conditions. In the coming years, the fields of Life Sciences and Cultural Mobility will be in the foreground.

Every year we have two or three focus groups, some within the framework of the topical fields and some independent of them. Especially in the natural sciences and with younger researchers, it has proven useful to jointly invite small groups of three to five Fellows whose individual research plans relate to each other from the beginning. To preserve enough flexibility to accomodate the unexpected, the Wissenschaftskolleg has made it a rule that less than half of a years Fellows are invited within the framework of emphasis groups.
